Abstract (English)

Traditional midwifery in Mexico faces serious restrictions and challenges due to health policies that prioritize hospital-based care, thereby displacing ancestral knowledge and with it, conceptions of the body, health, and the cosmos. In this context, the imposition of regulations on traditional midwifery can be considered a form of epistemicide. In response, the therapeutic-ritual practices, as well as the care and support provided by contemporary Tének midwives in the Huasteca Potosina, constitute political acts in which their authority as wise women is produced and recognized—within the fabric of community relationships and the Tének worldview.

La partería tradicional en México enfrenta serias restricciones y desafíos debido a políticas de salud que promueven la atención hospitalaria, desplazando saberes ancestrales y, con ellos, concepciones del cuerpo, la salud y el cosmos. En este contexto, la imposición de regulaciones sobre la partería tradicional, puede considerarse una forma de epistemicidio. Frente a ello, las prácticas terapéutico-rituales, así como el cuidado y acompañamiento que brindan las parteras tének contemporáneas, en la Huasteca potosina, constituyen actos políticos donde se produce y reconoce su autoridad como mujeres sabias en el entramado de vínculos que configuran la vida comunitaria y su propia cosmovisión tének.
