Scholarships
The WAU 2025 Congress is offering 20 scholarships of up to US$1,000 per person for registration fees, transportation, accommodation and/or living expenses to facilitate in-person attendance in Antigua, Guatemala, during the first week of the Congress, 3-8 November 2025.
Scholarships for Attendance/Participation at the WAU Congress 2025
The Organizing Committee of the Congress of the World Anthropological Union (WAU) invites graduate students, researchers and professionals in anthropology and related disciplines to apply for various scholarships to participate in the Congress, either in person or virtually. The scholarships are intended to facilitate the participation of people who will contribute to the objectives of the Congress and enrich its thematic lines.
To promote inclusiveness and interdisciplinarity, the WAU 2025 Congress welcomes graduate students and recent Ph.D. graduates from anthropology and related social science disciplines, including sociology, history, political science, cultural studies, and other relevant fields, provided they meet the eligibility criteria..
Types of Scholarships Available
In-Person Participation Scholarships
The WAU 2025 Congress is offering 20 scholarships of up to US$1,000 per person for registration fees, transportation, accommodation and/or living expenses to facilitate in-person attendance in Antigua, Guatemala, during the first week of the Congress, 3-8 November 2025.
Selection criteria:
- Have received their Ph.D. in anthropology or a social science discipline related to anthropology within the past five years, or are pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology or a related social science discipline (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or doctoral candidates).*
- Submit a panel proposal related to the tracks, or the thematic lines, proposed by the WAU 2025 Congress.
- Submit a paper proposal for your panel.
- The selection committee will give preference to those who study or work in upper middle income, lower middle income or low income countries.
- The selection committee’s decision is final.
* Master’s students in anthropology or a social science discipline related to anthropology may apply for the fellowship if they are writing their dissertation and have a letter from their advisor.
How to Apply for the Scholarship:
- Sign-in on the WAU 2025 Convention page.
- Submit a panel proposal (follow the instructions on the Congress page).
- Submit a paper proposal (follow the instructions on the Congress page).
- Complete the scholarship application, which consists of:
- 4.1 A 500-word letter of motivation.
- 4.2 A 250-word summary of your current research or the doctoral (or master’s) research.
- 4.3 Estimated annual income: salary, honorarium, and fellowships. The amount is requested in USD.
- 4.4 Country of residence/country from which you will travel to the WAU 2025 Congress.
- ** Master’s students should also send a letter from their thesis advisor to this email: org@waucongress.org
Online Participation Scholarships
The WAU 2025 Congress is offering 50 scholarships for online participation in Congress activities, to be held November 3-8, 2025.
Selection criteria and how to apply:
The selection criteria and how to apply for the scholarship are the same as for the in-person attendance scholarship.
IMPORTANT
Those interested in attending the WAU 2025 Congress may apply for both scholarships (on-site and online) at the same time; however, only one scholarship per participant will be awarded for the Congress, either for on-site or online attendance.
The Organizing Committee will issue letters of support for those who receive on-site scholarships. In addition, the Organizing Committee will assist each scholarship recipient in arranging travel to the Congress individually. However, it is the responsibility of each person traveling to Antigua, Guatemala to obtain or renew his/her passport and, if necessary, obtain a visa from the Guatemalan embassy or consulate in his/her home country.
