Confronting intersectional oppression: Black women activists in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
Abstract (English)
This paper details the history and stories of Black female activists in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Black female activists in Salvador came into their political consciousness because of the intersectionality of race, class, and gender, which they felt that they cannot be separated. Black Women’s activism shifted over 30 years from collaborating with men in mixed gender organizations to forming women only organizations focused on issues affecting Black women. Black women organized a Black women’s national march, led a campaign to raise attention high rates of domestic violence and homicide for Black women, and created a safe space of support to address issues of domestic violence.Keywords (Ingles)
