Use and abuse of animals in pastoralism. The case of the Apuan Alps (Massa Carrara) and Tuscia (Viterbo)

Abstract (English)
The relationship between humans and animals, and more broadly with nature in general, is at the centre of a broad debate. Indeed, the ethical issues surrounding the exploitation of animals, on the one hand, and environmental concerns, on the other, have highlighted for many the urgency of addressing these issues and changing current behaviour.
In fact, it is clear that there must be a change in the way humanity uses the planet's resources before it is too late.
Some examples of pastoralism in Tuscany and Lazio (Italy) are paradigmatic of the use and abuse of the animal world. Traditions mix with innovations. The current laws, supposedly written for the protection of animals, are the expression of a culture based on a monotheistic vision that has encouraged the abuse of nature .
The current situation of the pastoralists in these regions is a constant manifestation of the dichotomy between the concept of animal welfare and unconditional exploitation of the environment.
