Abstract (English)

Between 2011 and 2014, the Teatro Valle, the oldest theatre in Rome, was occupied by a group of performance workers. During those three years, performances, workshops, meetings and the very daily coexistence between artists and people involved in changing the model of theatre management (understood as a collective and political practice, as a common good and not as a building), have radically transformed the cultural life of the Italian capital. After the eviction, and more systematically from 2022 with the creation of the association Archivio Teatro Valle Occupato, several people who participated in the occupation have dedicated themselves to preserving the history of this experience through the creation of a public archive that includes recordings and physical objects. But it is also proposed to develop participatory devices of oral and performative storytelling based precisely on the contents of the archive: that is, to solicit the memory of occupants and attendees of the events from the archived objects and recordings, and to include these same narratives in the archive. As an ethnographer, I have been accompanying this process since 2024. Its transversal and participatory dynamics, the crossings that are generated between creation and documentation and, above all, the contrast between a linear conception of the ethnographic narrative and the non-linearity imposed by the archival format, suggest possible ways of escaping from the authorial and extractivist conception of representation that has characterised anthropology for much of its history. In this paper, I reflect on the possibilities of thinking of ethnography as an archive (activist, participatory, polyphonic), rather than as an instrument for filling gaps in the colonial archive.

Entre 2011 y 2014, el Teatro Valle, el teatro más antiguo de Roma, fue ocupado por un grupo de trabajadoras y trabajadores del espectáculo. Durante esos tres años, performances, talleres, encuentros y la misma convivencia cotidiana entre artistas y personas implicadas en cambiar el modelo de gestión del teatro (entendido como práctica colectiva y política, como bien común y no como edificio), han transformado radicalmente la vida cultural de la capital italiana. Después del desalojo, y de manera más sistemática a partir de 2022 con la creación de la asociación Archivio Teatro Valle Occupato, varias personas que participaron en la ocupación se han dedicado a conservar la historia de esta experiencia mediante la creación de un archivo público que incluye grabaciones y objetos físicos. Pero también se propone desarrollar dispositivos participativos de narración oral y performativa basados precisamente en los contenidos del archivo: es decir, solicitar la memoria de ocupantes y asistentes a los eventos a partir de los objetos y grabaciones archivados, e incluir esas mismas narraciones en el archivo. Como etnógrafo, acompaño este proceso desde 2024. Sus dinámicas transversales y participativas, los cruces que se generan entre creación y documentación y, sobre todo, el contraste entre una concepción lineal del relato etnográfico y la no linealidad impuesta por el formato archivo, sugieren posibles vías de fuga de la concepción autorial y extractivista de representación que ha caracterizado a la antropología durante gran parte de su historia. En esta comunicación, reflexiono sobre las posibilidades de pensar la etnografía como archivo (activista, participativo, polifónico), más que como instrumento para rellenar huecos del archivo colonial.
