Timeless Tales of Spiral Shells: A comparative analysis of Ammonite fossil geomythology with reference to Śālagrāma and Iniskim traditions
Abstract (English)
Fossils, in any case, have always been a source of mystery. The inability of man to find a proper explanation to the creation of these petrified remnants of life long gone, has led to the development of many fossil-centric folklores, myths, traditions and ritualistic practices. Ammonite fossils are no exception. With their spiral beauty and geological antiquity, they have inspired a plethora of myths and cultural interpretations across the world. This paper throws light on the geomythology in relation to ammonite fossils, focusing particularly on a comparative analysis of the worship of Śālagrāma Śilā in the Indian subcontinent and the Iniskim (Buffalo stone) tradition of the American Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy). These relics possess a profound religious and ritualistic significance which separate them for the profane. The study also examines the local practices and folk traditions with which ammonite fossils are associated. Fossil myths are a bridge between the sacred and the profane. Fossil folklores bear testimony to the inherent nature of Man to create an explanation for that which he could not explain. Using an inter-disciplinary approach, this study aims to trace and highlight the manifestations of ammonite fossils across various cultures around the world. Keywords (Ingles)
