Collaborative Processes in Engaged Anthropological Projects on the Digitization of Ethnographic Objects in Museums

Abstract (English)
The digitization of ethnographic objects in museums has become a field of intense reflection and collaboration between anthropologists, researchers, and indigenous peoples. With the advancement of digital technologies, new possibilities emerge to facilitate remote access to collections, promote virtual repatriation, and build shared narratives about cultural heritage. However, these processes also raise critical questions about power, control, refusals, and mediation strategies.
This panel invites researchers, museum professionals, and representatives of indigenous communities to reflect on the collaborative dynamics of these projects. We will discuss everything from the technical and epistemological challenges of digitizing collections to the political implications of this process, addressing fundamental questions such as: How does the digitization of ethnographic objects transform power dynamics in collaborative research? How can we ensure that these initiatives respect the desires and rights of the peoples from whom these objects originate? What refusals and limits are imposed by both communities and researchers? How can digital media be used critically to increase indigenous participation in the construction of narratives about their own heritage? What technical and methodological challenges emerge when working with digital platforms? By bringing together different perspectives, this panel seeks to foster an in-depth debate on the impacts and possibilities of digitizing ethnographic collections, expanding the dialogue between academia, museums, and indigenous communities. We invite all interested individuals to join this essential discussion on memory, technology, and heritage justice.
