Abstract (English)

Migrant shelters in Central America and Mexico have long served as critical waypoints, offering temporary refuge and safety, food, essential services, and access to information for migrants journeying north. In more recent years, the types of temporary shelter arrangements for people on the move have proliferated to include beaches at the entrance to the Darién and tent villages in New York City. At the same time, these temporary places of dwelling and waiting have become intensely politicized. Using “shelter” as an organizing concept and key site, this panel seeks empirically-driven contributions that examines how migrant shelters across the Americas shape and alter landscapes, practices of mobility and immobility, and sociability among people on the move.

Los albergues para migrantes en América Central y México han servido durante mucho tiempo como puntos de paso críticos, ofreciendo refugio temporal y seguridad, alimentos, servicios esenciales y acceso a información para migrantes que viajan hacia el norte. Más recientemente, los tipos de albergues temporales para personas en movimiento han proliferado e incluyen playas a la entrada del Darién y campamentos abiertos en ciudades como la de Nueva York. Al mismo tiempo, estos lugares temporales de vivienda y espera se han politizado intensamente. Utilizando el “albergue” como concepto organizador, este panel busca contribuciones empíricas que examinen cómo los albergues para migrantes en las Américas moldean y alteran los paisajes, las prácticas de movilidad e inmovilidad y la sociabilidad entre las personas en movimiento.
