Call for Panels

Deadline Update: February 28 (Friday), 2025.

The World Anthropological Union (WAU) Congress 2025 invites scholars, practitioners, and activists from around the world to submit panel proposals for this landmark event, taking place in Antigua, Guatemala, from November 3–8, 2025. The congress provides an inclusive platform for exploring critical global challenges and redefining collective understandings of humanity.

 

Panel Submission Guidelines for WAU 2025

When submitting your panel proposal, please follow these instructions:

 

  1. Panel Details

– Title: Provide a concise and descriptive title for your panel.

– Keywords: List 3 to 5 keywords that best represent your panel’s themes.

– Abstract: Write a short abstract between 45 and 450 words summarizing your panel’s focus.

– Bibliographic References: Include any relevant references (optional).

– Affiliations:

  – Indicate any affiliations with IUAES Scientific Commissions.

  – Specify any affiliations with WCAA Task Forces.

– Congress Track: Select the appropriate track within the WAU 2025 Congress that aligns with your panel’s subject matter.

 

  1. Convenors

– You may designate up to four individuals to organize or co-convene the panel.

– For each convenor, provide:

  – Full name

  – Email address

– Each added convenor will receive an email notification about their inclusion and instructions to sign up on the WAU 2025 Congress platform.

 

  1. Paper Submissions by Convenors

– Convenors are encouraged to submit their own paper proposals to their panel.

– This is especially important for those applying for scholarships, as it is mandatory.

– If you are not applying for a scholarship, you may choose to submit your paper proposal now or wait until the Call for Papers opens on March 17, 2025.

 

  1. Commentator

– Each panel must have a designated commentator.

– You can invite an external scholar or assign one of the convenors to serve in this role.

 

  1. Open Panels

– All panels will be open for paper submissions from interested participants.

– The Call for Papers will open on March 17, 2025, allowing individuals to submit proposals to your panel.

– Additionally, invited participants can submit their papers during this period.

By adhering to these guidelines, you will facilitate a smooth submission process and contribute to the success of the WAU 2025 Congress.

Each panel must align with one of the 21 thematic tracks:

  2. Interdisciplinary Approaches: Bridging Anthropology with Other Sciences
  3. Global Challenges and Local Realities: Anthropological Responses
  4. Technology and Society: The Anthropological Implications of Digital Transformation
  5. Future Directions in Anthropological Theory and Practice
  6. Heritage and Memory: Preserving Tangible and Intangible Culture
  7. Urban Spaces and Cultural Dynamics: Shaping and Being Shaped by Urban Life
  8. Migration, Diasporas, and Mobilities: Dynamics of Displacement and Belonging
  9. Histories of Anthropology: Local to Global Perspectives
  10. Anthropology of Climate and Environment: Human Adaptation and Advocacy
  11. Ethics in Anthropological Practice: Power, Identity, and Responsibility
  12. Decolonizing Methodologies: Redefining Research Paradigms
  13. Anthropology of Health: Cultures of Medicine, Wellbeing, and Care
  14. Language, Communication, and Power: Anthropological Perspectives
  15. Performing and Visual Arts: Expressive Cultures and Identity
  16. Feminist Anthropologies: Gender, Intersectionality, and Social Change
  17. Material Culture and Consumption: Objects, Commodities, and Cultural Identity
  18. Anthropology of Religion and Spirituality: Rituals, Beliefs, and Social Transformation
  19. Sensory Anthropology: Embodied Perception and the Culture of Experience
  20. Anthropology of Work and Labor: Global Production, Identity, and Change
  21. Legal Anthropology: Law, Governance, and the Negotiation of Justice
  22. Anthropology and Education: Pedagogies, Knowledge Transmission, and Decolonial Learning
  1. Institutional Diversity Requirement

To promote an inclusive and enriching dialogue, all panels must feature participants from multiple institutions. Priority will be given to proposals demonstrating cross-institutional collaboration, ensuring a broad exchange of perspectives. Proposals that do not reflect this diversity will not be considered.

 

  1. Presenter Requirements

At least one proposer must hold a PhD or equivalent advanced degree to ensure the panel maintains a high standard of scholarly expertise and contributes meaningfully to the congress’s academic rigor. Additionally:

– Each individual may submit only one paper for consideration. This ensures a diverse range of contributions and equal opportunities for all participants.

– Languages: Presentations can be in English or Spanish (no simultaneous translation available).

– Each paper presentation will be allocated 20 minutes, allowing speakers to present their research, findings, and arguments concisely while keeping the audience engaged.

 

  1. Paper Submission for Congress Proceedings

– Final papers may be submitted for inclusion in the WAU Congress 2025 repository, where they will be assigned permanent identifiers and metadata, ensuring long-term accessibility and scholarly recognition.

– Detailed submission guidelines will be provided upon the call for papers opening.

 

  1. Scholarships

Scholarships are only available to panel proposers who also submit a paper.

In-Person Scholarships:
