Cultural Food Practices and Mental Well-Being: A Psycho-Anthropological Study in Rural Varanasi

(English)
This study explores the complex relationship between cultural food practices and mental well-being among rural communities in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, using a psycho-anthropological approach. It examines how traditional dietary habits, food beliefs, and socio-economic conditions influence mental health outcomes, including emotional resilience, cognitive development, and psychological well-being. The research focuses on the impact of maternal nutrition, cultural food taboos, and caregiving patterns on mental health across different age groups. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, the study integrates quantitative surveys with qualitative ethnographic interviews. A sample of 300 households was surveyed to assess dietary patterns, nutritional status, and mental health outcomes using validated psychological scales. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions provide insights into cultural narratives surrounding food, health perceptions, and the influence of dietary norms. Preliminary findings reveal a significant association between cultural food practices and mental health. Households adhering to balanced traditional diets exhibit better cognitive health and emotional stability, while dietary restrictions and nutritional deficiencies are linked to anxiety and depressive symptoms. The study also highlights women’s adaptive strategies in managing food security challenges and their influence on community mental health. This research emphasizes the importance of culturally sensitive mental health interventions and nutrition education programs tailored to the socio-cultural dynamics of rural Varanasi. By integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary health practices, the study advocates for a holistic approach to improving nutritional and mental well-being.
