SACRED GROVES AND THE TRADITIONAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM AMONG THE KANDHA TRIBE OF KANDHAMAL DRISTRICT OF ORISSA, INDIA
Abstract (English)
The Kandha people of Kandhamal, Odisha, traditionally believe that a "Supernatural Power" governs all aspects of life, influencing the outcomes of human endeavors. This belief underscores their deep connection to nature and the preservation of natural resources, a common trait among indigenous societies worldwide. Central to their cultural and spiritual life are Sacred Groves, locally known as "SALA," which are clusters of trees arranged in circular patterns, each unique in composition. These groves are considered the abodes of deities who protect the inhabitants, animals, and plants within them. The Kandha people maintain familial ties with these deities, viewing the groves as reflections of their heritage. These Sacred Groves serve as reservoirs for numerous medicinal plants, preserved and utilized for generations. The community possesses extensive knowledge of the medicinal properties of various plants found within these groves, using them to treat ailments ranging from common colds to more complex conditions. This botanical knowledge is passed down orally through stories and cultural practices, encompassing practical information on agriculture, healthcare, and ceremonies vital to their well-being. The trees in these groves provide essentials such as food, shelter, medicine, and animal fodder, contributing significantly to the community's sustenance and happiness. Upholding these traditions and the sanctity of the Sacred Groves is paramount to the Kandha people, ensuring the preservation of their cultural identity and ecological knowledge. Keywords (Ingles)
