Documentation of Ancient Baolis in Bindraban, Kishtwar, JKUT, India.
Abstract (English)
Baolis or step wells or tanks are the ancient storage medium for water and are either constructed on natural springs are dug in the form of stepped wells or tanks. The paper focuses on the baolis in the Bindraban area of Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir. We well documented these for the first time with the help of my supervisor and the team in November 2023. Why is there a group of baolis decoratively made for the masses and why are there great artistic skills highlighted in sacredness inside and around the baolis? These research questions highlight the paper's main objectives. The sculpture represents great artistic qualities increasing the attraction to the baolis. The baolis depict some religious and cultural elements which develop an understanding of their social and historical importance. The findings of this paper include the location, plan, baoli art and architecture in Bindraban, Kishtwar which have been recorded in detail. These baolis were used by the local community which gained the status of semi-religious among them. Rituals might have been performed on these as history reveals the identity of the religious ceremonies and their use for various purposes including drinking, rituals and irrigation. The sculptures on the walls of the baolis in artistic creativity are also a great representation of stonework. The rich heritage preservation for the future is of utmost importance. Keywords (Ingles)
