An Indigeneity lens into Temporary Foreign Worker Programs for Agriculture: The case of Indigenous migrant farmworkers in Canada

Abstract (English)
What does it mean to be Indigenous from Guatemala in rural Canada? In this paper, I employ a lens of Indigeneity to analyze the recruitment of Indigenous peoples from Guatemala to work in Canadian agriculture as temporary foreign workers through federal government guest worker programs for the agricultural industry. Based on years of research and "convivencia" with migrant farmworkers from Guatemala in Canada and their families in their communities, I argue that Indigeneity has several tangible consequences for the migrant experience and the flow of this migration should be read in the context of hemispheric settler colonialism and North-South apartheid.
